Conscious Packaging: how we’re cutting waste and making recycling easier

Conscious Packaging: how we’re cutting waste and making recycling easier

Packaging waste is a global problem—and its growing. According to the World Bank, over 2 billion tons of waste are generated annually, with packaging contributing a significant share. Plastics, coated materials, and excessive single-use packaging often end up in landfills or pollute our oceans, taking hundreds of years to decompose. For eco-conscious consumers and businesses, the question isn’t just, What are we buying? but also, How is it packaged?

At Put a lid on it, sustainability is a core part of our reason for being—it’s a principle that guides every decision we make, right down to our packaging. Here’s how we’re doing our part to tackle packaging waste, why it matters and how you can make a difference.

The environmental impact of packaging waste

Did you know that packaging accounts for nearly 40% of all plastic production worldwide? While some packaging is recyclable, much of it isn’t—think plastic films, coated boxes, and multi-material items. These materials often:

Clog recycling systems due to contamination or complexity.

Leach harmful chemicals into the environment as they degrade.

Contribute to the 300 million tons of plastic waste produced annually, only 9% of which gets recycled globally (a bit more in Australia but not by much).

Beyond plastic, many materials like coated cardboard and decorative foils, though visually appealing, are non-recyclable and energy-intensive to produce. This creates a cycle of waste that’s hard to break.

Why coated cardboard falls short

Coated cardboard, often used to create glossy finishes or waterproof layers, is a less sustainable choice because the coatings—often made using plastic or wax—render the material non-recyclable. Even small amounts of coating can contaminate recycling streams, leading to the disposal of otherwise recyclable materials. Additionally, the production process for coated cardboard requires more energy and chemicals compared to uncoated alternatives, further increasing its environmental footprint. Opting for uncoated cardboard, like the boxes we use, ensures recyclability and a reduced impact on the planet.

Our packaging philosophy: minimal, practical, sustainable

We make all our packaging choices with one goal in mind: how to reduce waste without sacrificing quality or functionality. Here are the conscious choices we’ve made to ensure our packaging aligns with our mission:

1. Boxes with purpose

Our boxes are made from at least 50% recycled content, reducing the demand for virgin materials. We avoid printing or applying coatings, ensuring that every box remains 100% recyclable. No flashy branding here—just pure simplicity that’s better for the planet.

2. Compostable stickers and recyclable tape

Traditional stickers and tapes are oversized contributors to waste. Our stickers are fully compostable, breaking down naturally without leaving microplastics behind. We seal our packages with brown, uncoated recyclable tape, ensuring every element is easy to recycle.

3. Post-consumer recycled comp cards

Our comp cards are printed on 100% post-consumer recycled material, giving new life to old paper. By using materials already in circulation, we help reduce deforestation and energy use associated with producing new paper products.

4. No unnecessary merchandising materials

Unlike many brands, we’ve opted out of using disposable merchandising materials. Why? Because these items often serve a short-lived purpose before being discarded. Instead, we focus on creating products that speak for themselves, eliminating unnecessary waste without compromising on customer experience.

The bigger picture: why these choices matter

Every small decision adds up to a significant impact. Here’s how our packaging practices contribute to a healthier planet:

Reducing carbon footprint

Recycled materials typically use 50-80% less energy to produce compared to virgin materials. By incorporating recycled content into our packaging, we’re actively lowering carbon emissions.

Encouraging circular economy

By designing packaging that can be easily recycled or composted, we’re contributing to a circular economy where materials are reused rather than discarded.

Minimising landfill waste

Our uncoated, recyclable materials ensure that our packaging doesn’t end up in landfills. Compostable stickers and tape also break down naturally.

Inspiring choices

Our choices demonstrate that sustainable packaging doesn’t have to be boring or impractical. By showing what’s possible, we hope to inspire other businesses and consumers to rethink their relationship with packaging.

How you can make better choices

As consumers, the power to reduce packaging waste lies in our everyday decisions. Here’s how you can contribute to a more sustainable future:

  • Choose recyclable or compostable packaging: Look for materials like uncoated cardboard, compostable tapes, and biodegradable plastics. Be especially careful in choosing products which have blended packaging types as this may render the product unrecyclable.
  • Avoid over-packaged products: Opt for items with minimal and eco-friendly packaging to reduce waste.
  • Reuse and recycle: Give packaging a second life where possible, and ensure proper disposal of recyclable materials.
  • Support sustainable brands: Prioritise businesses that are transparent about their eco-friendly practices and align with your values.

Every purchase you make sends a message. By choosing sustainable packaging, you’re not only reducing your impact but also encouraging more brands to follow suit.

A better future, one package at a time

At Put a lid on it, we’re committed to making sustainability the standard. By prioritising recyclable, compostable, and post-consumer materials, we’re proving that conscious choices can lead to big impacts. Every box we ship, every sticker we place, and every card we include is a small step toward a world with less waste and more care for the environment.

Together, we can make a difference—one package at a time. Join us in this journey by supporting sustainable practices and spreading the word. Because a better planet starts with the choices we make today.
